Welcome to Pre-Nursery

We want your child to be safe, happy and secure

Pre-nursery is always a busy place to be!

Curriculum

The areas of learning are:

  • Communication and language.
  • Physical development.
  • Personal, social and emotional development.
  • Literacy.
  • Mathematics.
  • Understanding the world.
  • Expressive arts and design.

Communication and Language

It is important to give children the opportunities to experience a rich language environment.

We will encourage your child to develop their confidence to express themselves and to speak and listen in a range of situations.

We spend all of our time talking and listening carefully to your child and developing their speaking and listening skills. We do this through play, group talk time, sharing stories and playing games.

Physical Development

We spend a lot of time in our outdoor environment and provide opportunities to develop co-ordination, control and movement.

Your child will learn how to move their bodies with control in various ways such as playing in the sand, with the parachute or learning to ride a trike.

We encourage independence in the Pre-Nursery and your child will be encouraged to develop key skills such as washing hands, pouring drinks and dressing themselves.

We promote healthy lifestyles with lots of practical learning such as exploring our bodies, learning to brush their teeth and trying new food tastes and textures.

Personal, social and emotional development

We are passionate to make your child feel safe, happy and secure.

We encourage children to develop a positive sense of self, build relationships with others and learn how to manage their feelings.

We use lots of visual and positive reinforcement such as playing group games, using feelings monsters and using visual timetables.

We develop a sense of self and belonging with family tree photographs from home and friendship pictures and photos on display.

The classroom rules reinforced will help both at school and at home such as learning to share toys and when tidying up.

Literacy

We spark interest into literacy by beginning to learn and listen to rhymes, songs and sounds.

This is encouraged through our phonics.

We use nursery rhyme sacks, listening games and musical instruments to develop our listening skills.

Your child will be able to explore a wide variety of stories and books including some traditional tales such as ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’.

Mathematics

In the Pre-Nursery, we offer opportunities to develop key skills when learning number, shape and measure.

Your child will learn that maths is all around them through number and shape hunts and will be encouraged to sort by colour and size.

We explore and learn about space and measure through sand and water play as they pour, fill and empty containers.

Understanding the World

We spend a lot of time exploring the world around us. We look at people, places and outdoors which enables your child to make sense of their world and environment.

The children learn about seasonal changes and explore our woodland area on the school field. We learn about everyday life such as farm life, transport and people who help us.

The children learn a lot through sensory exploration and this is encouraged to learn texture, smell, colour, new vocabulary and experiences.

We make links to special events such as exploring vegetables and pumpkins in the Autumn and snow and ice blocks in the Winter.

Expressive Arts and Design

In the Pre-Nursery we encourage the children to explore and play with a range of media and materials. This is encouraged through painting, printing, creating and designing using their own imagination and ideas.

The children are provided with opportunities to explore a variety of activities in art, music, dance and role play. The children help to make their own role play areas such as this bus station after learning the song ‘The wheels on the bus’!
